MENTORING YOUTH
We work to introduce and engage the next generation of anglers.
Each year the LSSA partners with Duluth’s Hartley Nature Center to teach kids how to fish. Two or three March classroom settings are followed by two April sessions on the river. LSSA volunteer mentors are paired with students for both classroom and stream training.
Drift fishing gear, knot tying, bait preparation and regulations are covered in the classroom. Presentation and technique are taught on the river.
As usual, all the kids participating in the project receive a very nice steelhead fishing package; Fenwick rod, Okuma reel, vest, line and necessary terminal tackle free, paid for by the LSSA with some donations from various manufacturers. Russ Francisco of Marine General has provided the gear at near cost to the club each year. Jeff Wenger of Jeff’s Jigs in Two Harbors donated a collection of bead flies for each of the young participants in 2014.
